Chronic Migraine Q&A
There are a wide variety of headaches, but they’re all placed into two general categories:
Primary headaches
A problem in your head or neck directly causes these headaches. The most common types are tension headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches.
Secondary headaches
Secondary headaches develop due to underlying health conditions such as sinus congestion, traumatic brain injury, and medication overuse.
A migraine is a neurological condition that starts when something triggers activity in the cranial nerves. There are many possible triggers, but some of the most common are:
- Stress
- Caffeine
- Alcohol
- Lack of sleep
- Weather changes
- Dehydration
- Missing meals
- Certain foods
- Food additives
- Change in hormone levels
About one-third of migraine patients experience an aura before their migraine begins. Aura usually appears in the form of visual changes, such as seeing flashing lights or wavy lines.
Once your migraine starts, you have symptoms such as:
- Severe pain around one or both temples
- Throbbing, pulsating pain
- Sensitivity to lights, smells, or sounds
- Nausea and vomiting
- Vertigo
Migraines last at least four hours and may go on for several days.
After reviewing your medical history and performing an exam, your Vitruvian Health provider may recommend one of the following migraine treatments:
Botox® injections
If you have a migraine for 15 or more days a month, you may be a good candidate for Botox injections. Botox blocks nerve signals, which reduces the frequency of future migraines.
Ketamine infusions
Ketamine is a safe anesthetic medicine that can relieve migraine pain when infused intravenously in a low dose.
